Getting to Know Me
I was always the communicator in my classes and at events. The first one willing to jump into a discussion or be the leader for a group assignment. I was set on pursuing psychology in junior college but in my first semester, I decided to change majors after taking a communications class. My mom never finished elementary school, my dad and siblings got their high school degree but that was all. As difficult as it was, I knew I wanted to not only go to college but also graduate from it. My family has been my biggest motivator.
A year into my major, I began to look into public relations because I wanted to be more knowledgeable about media, writing and expanding my portfolio. That is how I picked up public relations as a minor.
I enrolled in classes such as digital media, gender communications, strategic writing. I did so because of how important it is to be versatile in your career. I also created a personal brand kit, my own website/portfolio, all which helped build my knowledge about the industry. My discipline and commitment to my classes, earned me spots on both the President’s and Dean’s list.
My classes required more group assignments, so I gained more practice in teamwork and presenting. I also interned as a social media and communications intern for Long Beach State’s athletic department. Through the internship, I learned to look for key moments to photograph for social media. I also learned how to update social media accounts and how frequency and consistency are key elements into maintaining engagement on social media.
My college courses along with my real-life experiences have developed my knowledge, allowing me or succeed at whatever I set my mind to, whether it’s in the area of communications, public relations, or social media.
